Sundar Pichai recounted feeling a profound sense of loneliness during his college and early professional life in the U.S., finding it challenging to fully acclimate. In an era before widespread communication, maintaining contact with his mother and partner proved difficult. His middle-class family’s financial constraints further limited calls to India, given the high cost of international communication at the time.

Sundar Pichai’s Entry into Google

In 2004, as Google rapidly expanded its global presence, Sundar Pichai joined the burgeoning company, taking on the crucial role as head of product management and development.

His initial work focused on the Google Toolbar, a feature designed to provide users of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox Web browsers with seamless access to the Google search engine.

Google had ambitions to develop its own web browser, later named Chrome. However, then-CEO Eric Schmidt initially hesitated to engage in browser wars, believing the company was not large enough in 2004. Despite this, Pichai presented a compelling development plan for Chrome, outlining a clear path to success that resonated as an immediate necessity with Google co-founder Larry Page. Chrome was subsequently released to the public in 2008.

That same year, Pichai was appointed Vice President of Product Development, prompting him to assume a more prominent public profile. Larry Page regarded Pichai as one of Google’s most loyal and dedicated team members.
