This innovative concept, named ‘AuREUS’ (an acronym for Aurora Renewable Energy and UV Sequestration), was developed by Carvey Ehren Maigue. Maigue is an electrical engineering student at Mapua University in the Philippines, whose work promises to redefine solar technology.

Maigue’s ingenious approach centers on creating an organic luminescent particle that efficiently absorbs ultraviolet (UV) light from various sources, not just direct sunlight. This particle then converts the UV light into visible light, which subsequently strikes a specialized solar film to generate electricity. Much like how plants perform photosynthesis, this luminescent material acts as an innovative converter, making the traditional requirement for direct sunlight in conventional solar panels obsolete.

The AuREUS Prototype: Innovation in Action

The development of AuREUS began with Maigue’s innovative use of fruit and vegetable crop waste, transforming it into the crucial luminescent material capable of converting UV light. By blending this material with a resin and coating a solar film, Maigue successfully created transparent, colored, glass-like solar panels. These unique panels have demonstrated a remarkable capacity to produce electricity. A 3 x 2 foot prototype panel, positioned on his window, proved capable of generating enough energy to charge two smartphones. Maigue envisions these panels, when scaled up, could empower buildings to become entirely self-sufficient in their electricity needs.

Currently, a pilot project is underway to implement this technology in a building housing his doctor friend’s clinic, aiming to demonstrate its real-world application and potential for broader adoption.

Maigue articulates a powerful vision for democratizing renewable energy. He states, “If we can democratize renewable energy, we can bring it both physically closer to people as well as psychologically closer.” This approach ensures individuals feel a greater sense of access to clean energy, moving beyond the traditional model where only large institutions with extensive rooftop space could harness solar power.
